Webservice Authentication for Windows Authentication Security

FIX: AssetTrack installation using Windows Authentication security has a number of errors related to the wrong authentication level set for specific web services.

SYMPTOMS

Windows Mobile:

  • Unable to connect to download the .NET framework
  • Unable to run update agent
  • Failure during partnership
  • Failure during sync plan download
  • Failure uploading collected data

Import Service:

  • Error connecting to remote host at the end of an import
  • Sync plans do not rebuild
  • Logging is not present on the homepage

AssetTrack 4:

  • Failure to upload and save collected data

Console:

  • Console loads with invalid permissions
  • Error loading console with authentication errors

CAUSE

A number of AssetTrack tools rely on the correct authentication level set for each web service in the web application. Group policies, installing with AssetTrack Security first before Windows Securty or editing the IIS metadata after a successful installation can change these authentication settings and cause the symptoms above.

RESOLUTION

Within IIS, navigate to the AssetTrack website and expand the folder tree to find the WebServices folder located at AssetTrack Site Name > AssetTrack > WebServices. Highlight the folder to bring up a list of the web services content.

From here it is possible to pick and choose specific web services to check their authentication levels.

  1. Right click on one of the web services.
  2. Select "Switch to Features View".
  3. Make sure the web service is now listed on the left folder tree navigation and highlighted.
  4. Select Authentication within the IIS section of the web service home screen.
  5. Verify the authentication levels with the table below.
