Understanding ServiceNow Assets vs. Configuration Items

Many ServiceNow customers are confused between Asset vs. Configuration Items. This article provides guidance on how AssetTrack works with ServiceNow, and how it relates to Asset and Configuration Management in ServiceNow.

AssetTrack is for Tracking Assets

Everything you want to track with AssetTrack is an Asset that should be stored in an alm_asset table. Some of those things are also CIs. Typically Asset.Model Category determines whether an Asset is also a CI.

AssetTrack always writes to Asset (alm_asset) tables. ServiceNow business rules copy relevant Asset information over to a corresponding CI table. Point being, you don’t need AssetTrack to write to the CI table directly. ServiceNow will take care of that for you.

ServiceNow Copies Relevant Data to CI Tables

These are the relevant default ServiceNow business rules that affect how ServiceNow copies Asset information to CI records. See business rule and associated script includes for specific application logic.

Your script includes may have been customized by your ServiceNow developer. Consult with that resource to determine if the out-of-box script includes have been modified.
